This makes me feel weird. First of all, it’s kind of amazing that they chose to do something as crazy and wonderful as Act 3 of Nixon in China to do at a gala. But I can’t tell if the guy singing Mao and the guy singing Nixon are trying to sing like they think their character would (in which case they would be extremely wrong and terrible) or if they just sing like that way. I really can’t stand either of them. The guy singing Chou En-Lai is pretty fantastic.
Also, it’s totally wild that an Asian is playing Pat Nixon and a Caucasian is singing Madame Mao. Mad props to Madam Mao on those crazy vocalises though.
